HWC Helps Indiana Communities Create Safe Access to Parks

Posted on: No Comments

According to the National Parks and Recreation Association (NPRA), people living within 10 minutes of a park are more active and healthy. However, less than 38 percent of the U.S. population actually live within a half mile of a park.

In an effort to help communities develop safer and more convenient places for Americans to be physically active, NPRA launched the Safe Routes to Parks program. Through Safe Routes to Parks, HWC Engineering works to make communities across Indiana and the Midwest more walkable by creating plans that build awareness and community support.

HWC recently worked with the town of Brookville, Indiana and the city of New Albany, Indiana on Safe Routes to Parks-related projects. HWC first conducted walking audits to assess walkability and identify routes that function well and routes that need improvement. Walking audits consider many factors, including sidewalk condition and size, crosswalk availability, accessibility for those with disabilities and aesthetic appeal.
