Brumfield Avenue and Embree Street Roundabout

HWC provided design, coordination with local utilities, bidding, and construction inspection services for the Brumfield Avenue and Embree Street Roundabout Project in Princeton, Indiana.

This project provided a solution to a traffic congestion problem at one of the City’s most utilized intersections. With more than 50 trains passing through the community each day, citizens dealt with many traffic delays.

More than 25 years ago, the City constructed an overpass on Brumfield Avenue to provide a route for vehicles to utilize when the train tracks were active, but traffic at this intersection worsened over the years.

HWC determined a modern roundabout was the best solution to address congestion problems at this intersection. The roundabout was sized to handle fire trucks (a local fire station is located on the southeast corner of the roundabout), semi-truck traffic, and farm machinery. Improvements included 300’ of urban roadway on each approach, a new storm drainage system, and accommodations for lighting, and water features in the interior of the roundabout.

The locally-funded $464,000 project was constructed in 2008. Upon construction completion, the City added a waterfall and landscaping in the interior and created a pocket park on the southwest corner of the intersection. While the local citizens were initially wary of the functionality of the roundabout at this location, it has proven to be the correct solution. Traffic now flows without disruption, eliminating congestion and traffic delays at this intersection.

Johnson County Interstate 69 Corridor Plan

With INDOT’s final determination for the Interstate 69 route serving as the catalyst, HWC was retained by Johnson County to create a corridor plan to guide planning in areas of the county impacted by the new interstate.  The plan’s analysis considered how three Interstate 69 interchanges would potentially create ripple effects throughout the county’s thoroughfare network.  The plan recommended changes to the thoroughfare plan classifications, new transportation routes in developing areas, as well as land use and infrastructure recommendations to support potential economic development resulting from Interstate 69.

I-69 Interchange Economic Development Plan

HWC worked with the City of Angola to develop an economic development strategy for the 1,260 acres surrounding the Interstate 69/US 20 interchange. The plan identified key issues facing the Angola community, a vision for development around the interchange, and strategies to implement the plan. This ultimately resulted in the city partnering with a private entity to install $4 million in infrastructure along with new commercial development.

Downtown Streetscape and Depot

HWC led the design and implementation of the streetscape improvements along North Railroad Street and South Railroad Street in downtown Remington, which included the introduction of bumpouts and modifications to the existing traffic flow and parking. Concurrently, HWC collaborated with KJG Architects on the depot building renovation and plaza, which has become an event center for the community. Extensive railroad coordination, adhering to grant funding requirements, and staying within budget were the main challenges of the project, which HWC guided to a successful outcome.

Main Street Streetscape

As part of the city’s Stellar Communities effort, HWC led the design and inspection of improvements to Main Street through historic downtown Rushville. A new mid-block pedestrian crossing, LED lighting upgrades, decorative street clock, and special paving were included. The nearly half mile-long corridor connects several other sites which represent the significant investments the city has directed into their downtown, including the Overlook at Riverside Park, the Farmer’s Market, the City Government Center, and Princess Theater.
