Central Plaza Archway

The City of Sullivan has continued efforts to develop the previous Central Plaza School site into a vibrant public space following the creation of the Sullivan Civic Center anchoring the north end of the site. Development plans call for the creation of a public event lawn, amphitheater, and splash pad, with a grand entry to the site on the southeast corner, directly across from City Hall.

HWC designed and detailed this entry archway for the City of Sullivan as part of READI funding allocated to the City and as the first phase of developing the Central Plaza park space.

Lincoln Park

Once the site of the Lincoln School for Colored Children, Lincoln Park required a careful approach to renovations to expand needed amenities to the neighborhood, while preserving and highlighting the park’s unique and special history to the citizens of Crawfordsville.

HWC prepared custom illustrations and graphic panels commemorating the people of Lincoln School within a small seating plaza. The seating plaza and signage was integrated with site improvements, including new pickleball courts, renovated basketball courts, a new shelter, and parking improvements.

River Recreation Site Boat Launch

The City of New Albany has historically been cut off from its adjacent waterways due to industrial development and flooding protections, including earthen levees and levee walls. To better connect residents to Silver Creek and the Ohio River, HWC was tasked with developing the River Recreation Site Boat Ramp.

The River Recreation Site Boat Ramp was a multi-phase brownfield restoration project, which included demolition and clean-up, boat ramp for motorized watercraft, trail extension, and river overlook.

The final phase will develop a nature park with trails and passive recreation opportunities.

Silver Creek Landing and Walkway

HWC provided survey, design, and construction services for the new Silver Creek Landing and Walkway facilities. Historically a popular gathering spot for over 100 years, the project provides additional safety for existing area users through bank stabilization. Providing connectivity between the trailhead on Providence Way and the Ohio River Greenway near the Loop Island Wetland Park, the approximate half-mile, shared-use concrete walkway opens accessibility to the waterway for all users. Located along the existing Ohio River levee, the project provides safe access for various uses including the new kayak/canoe launch point and the overlook for Ohio River/Silver Creek scenic viewing.

Permits required included IDEM 401/USACOE 404, USACOE 408, IDNR Construction in Floodway, and IDEM CSGP.

Sapphire Bay Aquatic Park

HWC worked alongside the City of Frankfort in developing concepts and subsequent construction plans for the replacement of the TPA Park Pool. HWC guided the City through a feasibility analysis of a new pool, construction documents, and a successful bidding process. Following a yearlong pause to the process due to the COVID pandemic, HWC helped with changes to the design and successfully led the project to construction.

The new facility continues a tradition of aquatic amenities at TPA park, becoming the third iteration of a pool with the original bathhouse at the same location. The new facility includes a beach entry pool with a large play structure, shade covered toddler bay, lazy river with dumping buckets and a raft slide, a waterwalk, and two waterslides. In addition to renovating the historic bathhouse, a new concessions building and modern mechanical building have been added.
