Downtown Revitalization Plan

HWC provided planning and urban design services for the Batesville Downtown Revitalization Plan, a community-driven effort to strengthen downtown Batesville through placemaking, economic development, and enhanced pedestrian connectivity. The Plan focused on establishing the downtown square and main corridor as vibrant community gathering destinations while improving the pedestrian experience through streetscape enhancements, lighting, branding, and public space improvements. Key planning efforts included the development of Inspiration Park, connected pedestrian corridors, adaptive reuse of the historic Ward School as a retail incubator, establishment of a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), and grant programs to support storefront improvements and new business investment. Together, these initiatives provide a clear vision for future growth while preserving the unique character of downtown Batesville

Remington Community Park Playground

Community Park Playground

HWC provided comprehensive site design and engineering services for the new playground and park improvements at Remington Community Park in Remington, Indiana. In partnership with Recreation Insites, Kompan Playground Equipment, and the Town of Remington, the project was designed to create a safe, accessible, and engaging recreational destination that expands opportunities for play, gathering, and outdoor enjoyment for residents of all ages.

Located south of the existing splash pad, also designed by HWC, the new playground expands the park’s offerings and creates a recreational destination for families and visitors. Designed as a regional attraction, this custom playground features a large, multi-level play dome, monkey trail, swings, music play, embankment play, sledding hill, and toddler play areas, delivering an engaging and one-of-a-kind play experience for the community and surrounding region.

    Shields Park Pool

    HWC provided comprehensive project management, site design, and engineering services for the renovation of Shields Park Pool in Seymour, Indiana, helping transform the existing aquatic facility into a modern, engaging destination for the community. Working with the City of Seymour, HWC developed and led a team of professional engineers to enhance the facility’s functionality, safety, accessibility, and long-term performance while expanding recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

    The project includes replacement of the main pool mechanical system, demolition of the existing children’s splash deck, design of a new children’s activity pool and concessions seating area, replacement of the waterslide, and development of a new mechanical building with restrooms. Through thoughtful site planning and coordinated engineering, HWC is helping create a refreshed aquatic environment that delivers an improved experience for visitors and supports the City’s vision for a vibrant community recreational amenity. The renovated Shields Park Pool is scheduled to open in the summer of 2027.

      Frances Wooden Park

      Frances Wooden Park, formerly known as Northside Park, has a rich history as a stop along the Underground Railroad in conjunction with the construction of the original Bethel AME Church in 1847 and the homesite of Crawfordsville’s second mayor, John Speed. It was a final stop, before reaching Sugar Creek, to continue northward along the route.

      The design team collaborated heavily with the members of the adjacent Bethel AME church, local residents, and local historians to envision a space that would serve the church and neighboring communities and commemorate the rich history of the site. 

      A new large shelter doubles as an outdoor space of worship for the Bethel AME congregation. A series of custom-designed benches denote important dates corresponding to site and local events preceding and following the passing of the 13th Amendment. The design of the playground structure and pathways within the park reflect the movement of water while musical play features mimic the sounds of water, strengthening the site’s connection to Sugar Creek.

      Today, the site acknowledges and highlights the rich history of the past while emphasizing gathering and play for the present-day community.

      Offutt’s Park Improvements

      HWC was hired by the City of Connersville to provide conceptual design, construction documents, bidding, and construction administration services for improvements to Offutt’s Park located on Virginia Avenue. The park updates include a walking trail with fitness nodes, housing equipment, and signage, a central shelter, and updates to the entrance drive and parking, advancements to the basketball court, pedestrian connections, a drinking fountain, a handwashing station, and hand sanitation stations. The project was funded using a combination of an OCRA grant and local funding. HWC coordinated extensively with the grant coordinator throughout the process. Construction for the project was completed by Dave O’Mara Contractor, Inc. in August 2025.
