New Albany Silver Creek Trail + Kayak Launch

New Albany, IN

Silver Creek Landing and Walkway

HWC provided survey, design, and construction services for the new Silver Creek Landing and Walkway facilities. Historically a popular gathering spot for over 100 years, the project provides additional safety for existing area users through bank stabilization. Providing connectivity between the trailhead on Providence Way and the Ohio River Greenway near the Loop Island Wetland Park, the approximate half-mile, shared-use concrete walkway opens accessibility to the waterway for all users. Located along the existing Ohio River levee, the project provides safe access for various uses including the new kayak/canoe launch point and the overlook for Ohio River/Silver Creek scenic viewing.

Permits required included IDEM 401/USACOE 404, USACOE 408, IDNR Construction in Floodway, and IDEM CSGP.

The King Street corridor provides an impactful gateway statement into Franklin. Main project elements include entry towers with vertical storyboards made of color-changing glass, a planted boulevard, trail amenities with nodes reflecting community history, and custom shade structures. All elements are connected by strategic lighting and landscaping. Over time, the mature landscape will establish a dynamic linear park experience. HWC lead a talented team of designers and fabricators including Cornerstone, Landtech, Circle Design Group, Smock-Fansler, and GRT Glass Design to implement this transformative project.

Kitselman Trail and Trailhead Park

The Kitselman Trailhead is a complex, multi-phased project that will connect the Cardinal Greenway Trail with the White River Trail while providing a gateway park for Muncie’s east side. HWC had the opportunity to collaborate with Flatland Resources and Land Collective on this project. Two phases have been constructed—a pedestrian bridge and the east side of the trailhead park–and the third is currently under design. This project was funded by INDOT and the City of Muncie.

Indiana State University River Campus Trail

HWC provided design, coordination, and construction administration for the River Campus Trail Project. This urban trail connects the Indiana State University campus to a growing area of campus along the Wabash riverfront, west of US Highway 41. The final design included a meandering trail to bring pedestrians safely under U.S. Highway 41 along an existing railroad corridor to the track and field stadium and along the top bank of the Wabash River. Custom engraved concrete planters serve as a safety barrier between vehicular traffic and the trail.

Muscatatuck Trail

As a part of the city’s Stellar Communities effort, HWC led the design and implementation of the Muscatatuck Trail, which connects the Muscatatuck County Park to downtown North Vernon with a multi-use trail. The trail begins in downtown North Vernon and extends south through several neighborhoods along a former railroad right-of-way before ultimately connecting to the Muscatatuck County Park. The county park has existing mountain biking and hiking trails, which serve as a natural connection to this multi-use trail.
