Maypole Heritage Trail

HWC provided comprehensive planning, design, and engineering services for the Oldenburg Maypole Heritage Trail, a multiuse trail project designed to transform the Town’s greenspace into a hub for recreation and community connection. HWC also assisted with grant application services to help the Town secure funding for the project through the Indiana DNR Next Level Trails Grant.

The Maypole Heritage Trail extends the Town’s existing pedestrian network to create an important connection to the iconic Oldenburg Maypole, a landmark of the Town that honors its rich German Heritage. The trail features custom trail nodes, signage, benches, and a picnic shelter as it connects from the Maypole plaza to the newly installed pickleball and basketball courts, a historic bridge, softball fields, and the community trail network. HWC continues to work with Oldenburg on planned future improvements to the Maypole Heritage Park.

    River Recreation Site Boat Launch

    The City of New Albany has historically been cut off from its adjacent waterways due to industrial development and flooding protections, including earthen levees and levee walls. To better connect residents to Silver Creek and the Ohio River, HWC was tasked with developing the River Recreation Site Boat Ramp.

    The River Recreation Site Boat Ramp was a multi-phase brownfield restoration project, which included demolition and clean-up, boat ramp for motorized watercraft, trail extension, and river overlook. 

    The final phase will develop a nature park with trails and passive recreation opportunities.

    Silver Creek Landing and Trail

    HWC provided survey, design, and construction services for the new Silver Creek Landing and Trail facilities in New Albany, Indiana. Historically a popular gathering spot for over 100 years, the project provides additional safety for existing area users through bank stabilization. Providing connectivity between the trailhead on Providence Way and the Ohio River Greenway near the Loop Island Wetland Park, the approximate half-mile, shared-use concrete walkway opens accessibility to the waterway for all users. Located along the existing Ohio River levee, the project provides safe access for various uses, including the new kayak/canoe launch point and the overlook for Ohio River/Silver Creek scenic viewing.

    Permits required included IDEM 401/USACOE 404, USACOE 408, IDNR Construction in Floodway, and IDEM CSGP.

    King Street Corridor

    The King Street corridor provides an impactful gateway statement into Franklin. Main project elements include entry towers with vertical storyboards made of color-changing glass, a planted boulevard, trail amenities with nodes reflecting community history, and custom shade structures. All elements are connected by strategic lighting and landscaping. Over time, the mature landscape will establish a dynamic linear park experience. HWC led a talented team of designers and fabricators including Cornerstone, Landtech, Circle Design Group, Smock-Fansler, and GRT Glass Design to implement this transformative project.

    Kitselman Trail and Trailhead Park

    The Kitselman Trailhead is a complex, multi-phased project that connects the Cardinal Greenway Trail with the White River Trail while providing a gateway park for Muncie’s east side. The project was divided into multiple phases for funding. The first two phases included the restoration and reuse of an 1899 historic truss bridge, trail design, levee floodwalls and embankments, site design, and facilities. The third phase will complete the western site design and includes new earthen levees and floodwalls, a parking lot, site amenities, a trail, and storm drainage improvements. The third phase is currently under construction.
