Pike Place 

After several buildings came down along a main downtown corridor, the City of Crawfordsville decided to transform the gravel lot into a central gathering space. HWC teamed with KJG Architects to complete the design and construction documents. Components of the park include a stage, custom public restroom building, event lawn, custom brick pillars with metal farmers’ market gates, site furnishings, landscaping, and decorative site lighting. Now consistently programmed, the space has become a central hub for community activities.

Kitselman Trail and Trailhead Park

The Kitselman Trailhead is a complex, multi-phased project that connects the Cardinal Greenway Trail with the White River Trail while providing a gateway park for Muncie’s east side. The project was divided into multiple phases for funding. The first two phases included the restoration and reuse of an 1899 historic truss bridge, trail design, levee floodwalls and embankments, site design, and facilities. The third phase will complete the western site design and includes new earthen levees and floodwalls, a parking lot, site amenities, a trail, and storm drainage improvements. The third phase is currently under construction.

Community Park Trail

HWC worked closely with the Town of Remington to secure a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund to develop a trail system within New Park. The main goals of the project were to create a one-mile-long walking and biking trail to connect all areas of the park, including their popular splash pad. A small footbridge and trail node with bike racks and a bike repair station were also included.

Morgan Street and Flatrock Run Trail

HWC led the design and inspection of the Morgan Street Corridor and Flatrock Run Trail projects in Rushville, Indiana. These amenities provide a vital 8’-wide pedestrian connection between the Rushville Commercial Historic District and Riverside Park. The corridor gives a unique opportunity to tell the historic story of the City through artistic and interpretive displays.

The combined $2.5 million projects were one part of the City’s Stellar Communities effort to reinvest and rediscover its downtown. This urban trail corridor includes multiple locations for public art and interpretive installations as well as improvements to the adjacent alley.

Steinker Platz

Funded partially by a tourism grant, this pocket park has become a favorite spot for frisbee in the summertime and a programmed event space during the annual Oktoberfest in the fall. HWC worked closely with the City to transform this existing gravel lot into an active urban pocket park. Special features included a copper trellis and dedication plaque, a stone engraved entrance sign, ornamental railings, and a wood trellis feature with evergreen trees as the main backdrop.
