White County Bridge #227
White County, IN
Bridge #227 Replacement and CR 300 East Reconstruction
HWC evaluated CR 300E from CR 1200S to CR 1250S for current safety conditions due to past accidents and public concern. The evaluation found the existing roadway geometry is equivalent to a design speed of 20 mph. In addition, Bridge 227 over Moots Creek is in the middle of this road segment and was identified for replacement through the bridge inspection. Based upon this information, White County proceeded with a 45 mph design speed for project development for the corridor to balance the factors of construction cost, construction impact to residents, safety improvements, and required no relocations. The final project scope included 0.6 miles of reconstructed roadway, a single-span, welded-plate girder bridge using galvanized rebar and galvanized steel, retaining walls, intersection design, drainage design, waterway permits, design minimization to wetlands & Moots Creek, driveway relocations, ROW acquisition of 12 parcels, and construction inspection. The project was bid in April 2020 and completed in May 2021 with 100% local funds.
This project utilized the unique technique and materials of galvanized structural steel, galvanized rebar, and fiber reinforcement in the concrete bridge deck and approach slabs. The previous bridge was built in 1981 and needed replacement after less than 40 years of service. The galvanized steel and rebar are anticipated to achieve the target 100-year bridge service life with limited maintenance requirements.
This project was recognized as a 2022 State Finalist for ACEC’s Engineering Excellence award.
Franklin King Street Corridor
Franklin, IN
King Street Corridor
The King Street corridor provides an impactful gateway statement into Franklin. Main project elements include entry towers with vertical storyboards made of color-changing glass, a planted boulevard, trail amenities with nodes reflecting community history, and custom shade structures. All elements are connected by strategic lighting and landscaping. Over time, the mature landscape will establish a dynamic linear park experience. HWC lead a talented team of designers and fabricators including Cornerstone, Landtech, Circle Design Group, Smock-Fansler, and GRT Glass Design to implement this transformative project.

US 50 HHA Overlay, INDOT Seymour District
HWC was selected to provide design services for the US 50 HMA Overlay project under the INDOT On Call contract in the INDOT Seymour District. HWC extended the functional life of the asphalt overlay by addressing cracks at joint deterioration and longitudinal cracks by construction of partial and full depth patching of the underlying concrete pavement and application of a 2” mill/fill of the asphalt overlay.
HWC also brought the curb ramps to current ADA standards, as well as updated the nine existing traffic signals to have APS devices installed where applicable.

Posey County, IN
SR 66/Rexing Road Intersection Improvements
HWC provided roadway design, erosion control permitting, IDEM water permits, small structure design, right-of-way plan development, and public hearing coordination services.
HWC worked with INDOT to develop a solution to keep SR 66 open during construction by utilizing temporary portable traffic signals during the phased construction of the box culvert and a multi-phased plan for the reconstruction of the intersection.
Project let in April 2018 at a cost of $1,300,000, which was 5% below the engineer’s estimate.
